Top 3 paragliding in Medellin (2024 Guide)
Introduction: paragliding Medellin?
YES, you might not know this, but Medellín and Antioquia are surrounded by mountains. This geographical feature makes paragliding a common activity in the region, and in recent years, with the increase in tourism, the available options have grown. Therefore, we’re excited to present a guide to what we consider the best paragliding experiences in the area, ranked by views, experience, authenticity, and more. So, stay tuned to discover incredible spots for this sport, regardless of whether you have prior training. You can enjoy all three without any issues (weather permitting, of course):
3. San Felix paragliding
This is perhaps the oldest and most frequented paragliding spot by the locals of Medellín. Located close to the city, specifically in San Felix to the north, about an hour’s drive away, it’s a great option for those short on time. The activity takes place atop a mountain, where you can find two companies offering this service.
Flights last between 20 to 30 minutes, depending on weather conditions, and with good weather, you can land at the same spot from where you took off. The views you’ll enjoy include the northern Aburrá Valley (where Medellín is located) and its surrounding mountainous landscape.
Prepare to see houses that look tiny and cars that resemble pins, as well as the green hillsides that envelop the city. Moreover, in this area, you can enjoy one of the region’s tastiest local foods, a bread with three types of cheese called “Panchocha,” a classic best enjoyed with hot chocolate.
After your flight, don’t forget to stop by and order a Panchocha. Anyone from there will know exactly what you’re talking about.
2. Cocorná Paragliding
Along the road from Medellín to Bogotá, about halfway, lies a marvelous destination. It’s the peak of a large mountain overlooking the town of Cocorná.
A must-stop for most drivers heading to Bogotá to snap a photo with the breathtaking landscape. About 2 hours from Medellín (a bit longer on traffic-heavy days), you can enjoy paragliding at this fantastic location.
With flights ranging from 20 to 40 minutes, you’ll be mesmerized by views of waterfalls bursting from a wall of lush, incredible vegetation, alongside a climate that shifts from cold to warm.
On this journey, you’ll take off from the Mirador de Cocorná and land near the main park of Cocorná, hundreds of meters below on the mountain, where you’ll notice a complete climate change and immerse yourself in the setting of a highly traditional town, where the Antioquian culture is still preserved.
1. Cauca River Paragliding (Jerico)
This is, in my opinion, the best paragliding spot in Antioquia and perhaps the most beautiful in Colombia (competing closely with the paragliding in the Chicamocha Canyon in Santander).
The only drawback might be the challenge of getting there on your own (That’s why you should check out our tour that will take you to experience this and also explore the beautiful town of Jeric)
Specifically, Jericó is located at the top of a mountain in the southwestern region of Antioquia. Also about 2 hours from Medellín, and from this mountain, you can see a valley of coffee and lemon crops, green and yellow hues, and the magnificent Cauca River winding through the area like a serpent.
This landscape, in our opinion, far surpasses the views you’d get in Cocorná or San Felix, especially because the flight path (with three different options) will take you gliding past ancient trees on a seemingly endless jungle mountain, then soaring over the Cauca River and its landscape.
As mentioned, you can choose from three flight options, each with a further landing point and, consequently, a longer duration.
Among the three, this experience is the most costly due to the extensive logistics involved, as returning to the takeoff site involves approximately a 45-minute journey, making this paragliding experience take at least 2-3 hours.
But don’t worry, with our private tour to Jericó, our transport will be waiting for you at your landing spot, allowing you to enjoy more of your life and spend less time traveling.
Conclusion
These are the three best options for paragliding in Antioquia, with some closer than others and varying significantly in price. Your decision will ultimately be how much you’re willing to pay for the view you receive.
If you want to see unique landscapes, I highly recommend paragliding in Jericó. If you’re pressed for time but wish to experience the thrill of flying, Parapente San Felix might be your best option.
In any case, the important thing is that you live the experience and tell your acquaintances that Medellín offers these incredible adventure options.
